How to sing in Mixed Voice
So what IS mixed voice?
Despite what you might have heard - mixed voice really IS a real, anatomical technique in your singing voice.
It involves balancing the TA and CT muscles together, let me explain.
The TA muscle - the thyroarytenoid muscle, makes up the body of your vocal folds and when contracted, literally contracts the vocal folds themselves shorter and fatter to create more body, depth and thickness; both physically and also in a tonal sense.
The CT muscle - the cricothyroid muscles wrap around the larynx and when contracted, literally STRETCH the vocal folds long, thin and tight to allow the folds to vibrate at an incredible fast pitch; allowing you to sing high notes with ease - but at the expense of the depth and thickness you enjoy in your chest voice.
The key to learning how to sing in Mix Voice is to actually use these muscles at the same time - they have what is called an "antagonistic" relationship, meaning that you are contracting the vocal folds short and fat to create depth and weight, while ALSO stretching them long and thin to facilitate your higher range and head voice overtone.
Basically, you're using chest and head voice together AT THE SAME TIME to sing in mixed voice.
So all of those generic "mamama" exercises you've seen out there that claim to magically engage your mixed obviously don't work - because they're not showing you exactly how, what, why, when and where to find and develop your mixed voice.
The first key to developing your mixed voice is to connect your chest and head voice by handing off smoothly between TA dominance and CT dominance - basically, fluidly moving between weight in the folds to length in the folds while maintaining vibration and connection without flipping of breaking.
