What is Mixed Voice Singing? And what exactly do your do to learn how to sing in mix voice?

Great singers do it, beginners struggle with it.

End of tutorial...

In all seriousness, mixed voice really IS the key to all great singing.

The key to increasing you vocal range.

Singing with POWER.

Effortlessness.

Lots of people talk about it - videos about mixed voice are a dime a dozen on YouTube.

But, noone seems to know exactly what it is or how it works or exactly how to sing in mixed voice; so how the hell are you supposed to develop it if those voice gurus don't even know what it is?

Let me clear this whole mixed voice mess up for you.

CHEST VOICE occurs when you contract the vocal folds using the thyroarytenoid muscles. The "TA" muscles sit within the body of the vocal folds themselves and create physical thickness and body to your vocal folds; while creating tonal depth and thickness to your tone.

HEAD VOICE occurs when you stretch the vocal folds using the cricothyroid muscles. The "CT" muscles actually sit underneath the larynx and wrap around your voice box. When you contract the CT muscles, they actually "rock" the larynx forward and stretch the vocal folds - making then long, thin and tight; allowing you to sing high notes with ease.

Now, when most people first start learning how to sing, there's a defined break between chest and head because they use these muscles separately.

I'm sure you can relate.

You can only push your chest voice so high.

But head voice sucks.

So you continue pushing and pushing and pushing... while getting absolutely nowhere.

The key is actually to develop an antagonistic relationship between these muscles, where you're creating touch of contraction within the vocal fold body, but at the same time stretching the folds longer and tighter.

This lets you sing with the same tonal depth and beauty of your chest voice while enjoying the extensive range afforded by your head voice.
