So you want to sing higher notes - easier, bigger, better, higher notes. You've heard that learning how to sing high notes should be easy...

But learning to sing is a tough game, right?

YouTube is a minefield of marketing BS and 'reaction' videos that show you absolutely nothing about actually singing any better.

Your local singing teacher has never even heard of Chris Cornell, let alone having the slightest ability to actually show you how to sing a Soundgarden song; her lessons are all lip trills and piano scales right?

You've tried yelling.

You've tried singing soft.

You've tried yarling - whatever the hell that is.

But nothing works.

You think you crack the code with some trick you saw on YouTube... but two weeks later you right back to yelling and breaking again.

Is it game over?

Is this the end of the line?

^ I can relate.

This is exactly how I felt for MANY years, even after taking singing lessons for a full decade and seeing a pathetic amount of progress.

I started to wonder whether I really had what it takes to become a better singer, whether my voice just sucks or even if my voice was BROKEN from all the years of yelling and struggling.

Until I was shown five simple and effective keys for singing high notes with ease.

This ain't no rehashed "yawn before you sing" list of throwaway tips like "support is king!" that really leave you with more questions than answer - this is the real deal, and let me tell you why;

Because I wasn't a natural singer myself - and I sure as hell didn't know how to sing high notes.

So, I had to earn the ability to sing well.

It's been hard fought, hard won - and because of this, I absolutely understand the mountain you're starting up at, wondering how the hell you're going to get to the other side.

But here's the thing - you don't even need to climb to the top of the ragged rocks to succeed as a singer.

You just need to re-evaluate the terrain and avoid the mountain completely.

And let me show you exactly how to sidestep the jagged rocks of frustration and disappointment that the 'regular' path of learning how to sing drags you directly across.

#1 - Resonant Space

Have you heard of the Soft Palate?

It's the soft, fleshy flap that the uvula hangs down from in the back of your mouth.

And learning to use it properly is like being handed the keys to the kingdom instead of wallowing away in the dungeon.

Okay okay, enough with the dramatic metaphors, let's get serious for a moment.

When the soft palate is raised up into the pharyngeal space at the back of the sinus, this creates resonant space - akin to the soundhole of a guitar or the resonance chamber of a snare drum as an example.

The soft palate actually has MANY functions in singing; it's not just about yawning and raising this sucker and hoping for the best. Learning to sing your vowels properly is the key to resonating efficiently within this space.

Chest voice is a 'neutral' space, with the soft palate engaged and raised slightly. Head voice is a narrowed space where the soft palate is raised and fully contracted.

The interesting stuff really happens in between these two co-ordinations.

Mixed Voice.

Belting.

Extending your high range.

Full voice in every register.

Connecting chest and head voice.

Vowels are the key to singing high notes in full voice with total ease.

Did you know there are SIX base vowel sounds, and four modified overtones within each of these vowels?

Well now you know the reason you've been struggling to sing high notes; because developing these vowel shifts is the true key to learning how to sing high notes.

#2 - Forward Placement

You've tried those NAY and NYAH exercises before - and they SUUUUCK bigtime.

They sound awful.

Who in their right mind would actually want to sing like that?

You're right - the key isn't actually to sing like you're a bratty kid squeaking through your nose.

The key is really to combine the bright, buzzy, intense timbre you achieve on these 'forward' sounds and combine it with step #1 - resonant space.

When you sing plain old "nasal" - the velar port is open in the soft palate, meaning that airflow literally escapes through your nose and you sound 'nosey'.

^ This isn't actually forward placement it's just nasality.

Now, if we focus on the bright, buzzy, zippy sound and sensation that you get on these bratty sounds, but you're ALSO raising the soft palate correctly to create resonant space and block off the velar port so the soundhole is opened up like a balloon with one entry and exit point instead of a passage out of the nose - you'll end up with a DYNAMITE vocal tone that is effortless, free, powerful and professional.

See here's the thing - when you see a YouTube video telling you "the secret" to great singing, it's generally only 1/10th of the secret that you're being told. Sure, the coach in the video sounds great and you 'get it' - but when you try it yourself if absolutely sucks, right? And that's because you're not being told the full story.

You see, there's really a "right" way to sing - and drilling lip trills and vocal exercises 10 hours a day simply won't show you HOW to sing correctly.

In fact, blindly practicing exercises in the WRONG way can set you back weeks, months - years of progress by developing incorrect muscle memory.

So you really don't need another guru telling you that they have the secret to great singing - you just need a 'blueprint' for your voice to know how/when/why to make the required changes within the vowel and tonality to achieve an effortlessly free but powerfully resonant tone.

    #3 - Mixed Voice

That ever elusive "Mix" tone doesn't have to be a mystery anymore.

When you understand exactly WHAT mixed voice is both on an anatomical level and also in relation to the tonal centre of your resonance - you'll nail mixed voice every time.

Chest Voice occurs when the TA muscles - the Thyroarytenoid - contract the vocal folds short and fat like a dense square. This creates both physical and tonal depth, weight and thickness - to both the vocal folds and also to your tonal.

Head Voice occurs when the CT muscles - the Cricothyroid - stretch the vocal folds long, tight and thin like an elastic band. This allows your vocal folds to vibrate at a faster speed to reach high notes with ease; with the caveat really being at the cost of the 'weight' you enjoy in your chest voice.

MIXED VOICE occurs when you develop an antagonistic relationship between these muscles; stretching your vocal folds while also retaining bodily weight so that you have a fuller tone that is effortless and free.
