You're probably expecting some flowery answer to your question "can anyone learn to sing well?" like "oh yes, absolutely!"
"Anyone can do it!"
Or even "only with my magic singing course!"
But the truth is, if you're wondering can ANYONE learn to sing well - the answer is essentially no, but not for the reasons you're probably thinking.
There's no anatomical reason why you can't be a good singer.
Unless of course you're lacking a diaphragm, vocal folds, a tongue or a soft palate - which in most cases means you're dead, so if that's the case, I think you've got bigger problems to deal with, right?
No, the reason why not everyone can learn to sing well is more logistics, and secondly ATTITUDE.
I'm not talking about some pep talk of "you go get 'em kid!" - I'm really talking about your expectation and attitude towards the voice.
"I can't sing because I'm a baritone"
"My voice doesn't have that quality"
"You've always had those high notes - I don't"
"My speaking voice is low"
"So and so is only a good singer because they're a tenor"
"I just have a bad voice"
"They're a natural - but I'm not"
^ The people that say these kinds of things absolute will NOT become good singers.
It's really a self fulfilling prophecy - and for a very real reason.
This isn't some woo-woo hippie BS, I'm really talking about the reticular activation system.
You probably don't know what that is, but you DEFINITELY have one.
It's that special part of your brain that allows you to hyper-focus in on any one task.
Think about the Mother of a two week old newborn - the Mum doesn't wake every ten minutes when that 200db plane roars over the house, but when that tiny baby makes the quietest squeak in the next room; the Mother is up and in the room before they're even awake.
Or even if you take a walk in nature, and I tell you to take note of EVERYTHING that is brown - the dead grass, tree bark, the possum that just darted up the tree.
And you do a great job and spot 42 different brown coloured things on our nature walk.
But then I ask you point blank: how many BLUE flowers did you count on the tree a half mile back?
You can't answer.
You SAW the flowers, they were definitely THERE, but you filtered out this 'useless' information.
And that's exactly what is happening to your singing voice - you're hyper focused on all the excuses above, hyper focused on everything that is going wrong rather than hyper focusing in on the positive changes that are happening in your voice.
Meaning, you never repeat them.
You're just back to square one again the next day with ZERO progress - you're not repeating the steps required to make solid progress in your singing because you're zeroing in on how BAD you sang, the BREAKS, the STRAIN.
You're filtering out the jumbojet of progress screaming in your face and you're hyper focused on that baby in the next room.
The Reticular Activating System - it's a real thing, go and google it if you like.
THIS is the reason that you've been unable to learn how to sing; not your inability to sing with compression, or vowel modification, or because you've got a low voice.
The RAS is either your best friend or your deadliest of foes as a singer - which one are you choosing?
Now, a hyper focused RAS is actually something that I too used to struggle with when I took singing lessons - for nearly 10 years I was convinced I was just a shit singer and had no potential; until I learned the simple skill that I'm about to share with you in this video.
