Why can't I sing high notes anymore? Is one of the MOST common questions I get here at Foundation Vocal.
You were great in your 20s, okay in your 30s - and by the time you're my age in your 40s, the soaring range of your youth is all but gone..... but why? Let me give you some personal background as I share the answer and solution for you.
I was originally a guitarist - I had no interest in ever becoming a singer.
Until the job of FINDING a singer for my band became apparently fruitless.
There was the glam guy in spandex.
There was the pantera guy smashing himself in the head with the microphone.
There was the guy who just wanted to hang out and drink beer.
So, I stepped up to the microphone, opened my mouth, let out and almight roar and...
... I absolutely SUCKED.
Seriously.
I blew out my voice two songs in.
I couldn't hit half the notes.
I couldn't sustain notes or stay on pitch.
It was a proverbial shit show, excuse my French.
So let me start by saying I'm actually not one of those guys who "could" sing high notes and now "can't" - I'm exactly the OPPOSITE.
I've got a low voice to begin with. Coupled with an Aussie accent. Coupled with bad habits. My warmup routine was three beers. Needless to say, my technique used to suck.
But with careful training, practice and dedication to the method that I'm sharing here at Foundation Vocal, I've actually taken my <1 octave range up to 3+ octaves of full voice connected in all directions with no breaks, no strain and a super consistent and reliable tone in every register.
But your real question is why you can't sing high notes ANYMORE.
You're probably different to me - you used to fluke it.
Maybe you took a singing lesson or two many years ago and the lip trills and exercises helped you get there.
But now - you've just got no idea what you're doing, right?
So, technically you're in the same boat that I was in many years ago regardless of whether you USED to be able to sing high notes, or not (like me).
Your technique is letting you down, and let me tell you why:
You see, there's really a "right" way to sing - and drilling lip trills and vocal exercises 10 hours a day simply won't show you HOW to sing correctly.
In fact, blindly practicing exercises in the WRONG way can set you back weeks, months - years of progress by developing incorrect muscle memory.
So you really don't need another guru telling you that they have the secret to great singing - you just need a 'blueprint' for your voice to know how/when/why to make the required changes within the vowel and tonality to achieve an effortlessly free but powerfully resonant tone.
Add your details above to receive your free vocal blueprint that shows you exactly how, where and why to make these changes when you sing!
