So you want to teach yourself how to sing.
But those high notes are probably killing you right about now, right?
Even after a solid workout of lip trills, "mamamas" and a few Hail Mary's - you just don't seem to be singing any better than when you first started.
So how do you teach yourself how to sing the most effective and RIGHT way?
The answer is simple - first, you need to develop THE #1 most important fundamental of any great singer; connecting head and chest voice.
Start with this video if you're not there yet - how to connect head and chest voice [VIDEO]
... And once you get that down, we're going to get SERIOUS by working out how to sing high notes in an easier, more efficient way using this important fundamental that we just worked out.
The most important thing you need to understand about singing, is that the "pitch" that you sing comes from vibration of the vocal folds - a "frequency. You probably already know that.
But, did you know that your VOWEL is ALSO a frequency? Well - more than one frequency grouped together in what is known as a 'formant'.
We'll keep it simple.
The pitch is a frequency that comes from vibration of the vocal folds, and your vowel is a frequency that comes from vibration of the vocal folds.
Are you seeing the conflict of interest here?
If you're singing a vocal which requires a specific frequency - lets say "AH" like the word "hard" (without the R consonant) as an example.
That's fine in your chest voice, but what happens to your vowel as you start INCREASING the frequency of vibration of the vocal folds?
I'm imagining a bright yellow lightbulb on top of your head right now... am I right?
Basically, as you ascend in pitch and range, you need to adjust the colour of your vowel to match the frequencies of your ascending pitch - meaning, you need to 'modify' your vowel as you ascend to cater for the changing frequencies.
It's actually VERY easy.
