So you want to learn how to sing Man In The Box by Alice in Chains - and you've realised just how HARD this damn chorus is, right?
Well there's an easier way.
When you finally master your vowel sounds, singing like Layne Staley of Alice in Chains, in particular learning how to sing Man In The Box becomes about a billion times easier.
You see, Layne Staley was an extremely well trained singer.
You might not realise that through all the grit, gravel and warbling - but there's a serious key to developing the same powerful and effortless range that Layne was known for:
Vowel Modification.
It's actually a really simple concept, but one that is fraught with so much misunderstanding (thankyou lord YouTube for your 7.6 million videos about vowels that really show you nothing at all), because most of us don't really know WHAT a vowel really is.
Did you know that there are actually two formants to each sung vowel? A group of frequencies behind the tongue "structure" and another separate group in front of the tongue "clarity" that blend together to create what you hear as a vowel or word when you sing/hear a good singer?
No?
Well this is why Vowel Modification hasn't been working for you.
A great example is an AY vowel like the word "hey".
The structural formant of an AY vowel is low and deep, kindof like a church bell - because the space behind the tongue is large and wide, ringing out with a slower, wider frequency.
The 'clarity' formant of the same vowel is actually high and bright, like a dinner bell - because the space in front of the tongue is small and narrow, ringing out with a brighter, higher frequency.
These two sounds come together to give you an "AY" sound.
Now, as you ascend, the structure of this vowel becomes inefficient for vibrating higher frequencies within our pitch, right?
So, we need to alter the 'structure' of our vowel away from this chest voice overtone to facilitate our full voice in each of our higher register.
AY becomes EH becomes IH becomes EE - all in the structure of the vowel, not the 'pronunciation' of the vowel.
Clear as mud?
