So you want to learn how to sing in a band.

If you're here, then I'm guessing you're SERIOUS about it.

Not just hanging out in a rehearsal room wasting your time.

But learning how to sing in a band for REAL and actually achieve results and smash your goals as a singer and with the band.

Now, I've actually been at this whole 'band thing' for over 20 years - I was in my first band in the late 90's at the tail end of highschool.

We were shit.

But most importantly, I was absolutely shit.

I was such a bad singer that we were really looking for someone other than me to do it full time, and I would head back into the shadows as the guitarplayer that I really was.

Needless to say, I've never been a 'natural' singer.

Yet here you see me releasing albums that get wicked praise for my vocals, but more importantly; coaching singing professionally now for over a decade.

So how exactly did I go from the vocal dunce of the band to a seasoned pro?

Was it a course?

Was it a method?

Was it one of those YouTube gurus that you've seen?

Nope, nope and nope.

The short answer is that it was a LOT of hard work, perseverance, training, training and more training. But the longer answer is a little more complex if we're going to get into exactly what changed in my voice and really let me move out of the shadows as a guy who hated the spotlight and basically hated singing too (because i was just so BAD at it) to the pro voice you're about to see in my "before and after" video below.

But first, let's talk about exactly what "hard work" we're talking about.

Learning how to sing isn't exactly like lifting weights and just turning up to the woodshed every day and inch by inch growing bigger muscles.

Singing is a game of finesse, balance and care - your voice isn't a flamethrower, it's more like a high precision scalpel, ready to cut through the silence with extreme accuracy.

But, that's not how most of us sing naturally, right?

If I had a dollar for every time I strained, struggled and blew my voice out - we might not even be having this conversation right now, I'd be on a desert island sipping margaritas.

So it definitely wasn't a "time spent" kind of pursuit, or a "practice makes perfect" kind of thing - because I tried really hard for a REALLY long time and just kept getting worse and worse, and getting more and more confused and frustrated.

The key here is "perfect practice".

Practicing in the RIGHT way.

Singing in the RIGHT way.

Singing the RIGHT vowel...

... in the right way.

You can see the pattern here.

I sucked at singing because I was making the wrong choices and using my instrument in the wrong way.

It was a vicious cycle.

I'd even wear my voice out with an hour's practice because I was singing so badly and my foundation as a singer was so terrible.

The Aussie accent certainly didn't help, and having a lower than average voice was really the icing on the cake.

But they're just excuses, not real REASONS that I wasn't getting better.

After ten years of vocal training, I was actually singing in exactly the same way that I was on day one - sure, I'd done about ten billion lip trills in that time, but when I actually sang songs it was right back to struggle city.

And the singing lessons I was taking, the advanced concepts I was learning - these were all just like throwing a lick of paint on a pile of rubble; it's still a pile of rubble at the end of the day.

If I had to pick just ONE thing that has changed in my vocal approach from day 1 as a trainwreck singer blowing their voice out two songs into set, to the pro voice you're about to hear in my "before and after", it's my vocal foundation.

FOUNDATION.

FOUNDATION.

FOUNDATION.

I'm not caught in a loop, it's just THAT important that you need to hear it more than once.
