If you're wondering whether good singing voices are genetic - then yes, you're absolutely right.

But not in the way you think.

In terms of our instrument; the voice - everyone has the same tools and same ability to become a good singer.

Are we all born spectacular singers with a 3+ octave range? Of course not - I know I definitely wasn't.

I've spent decades researching the voice and developing my craft as a singer, so I'm definitely not what you would call a 'natural' singer - initially, this whole singing thing was a total shitshow and my voice just sucked.

But after many years training, hard work, dedication and a fair bit of the 'ol elbow grease - I'm sometimes now mistaken for a 'natural singer' by people that don't know my history and story as a singer.

If I had a dollar for the amount of singers who have commented either on my training videos or original music "I'd love to sing like you - but I'm just not a natural", we might not be having this conversation, because I'd be on the beach in barbados or something instead.

Being a "naturally gifted" singer who just 'gets it' from day one, makes all the right choices and sounds amazing because of this - is often a genetic thing, or societal thing or even an accent/dialect thing in some cases.

With a lower than average voice type, an Aussie accent, being a 'late starter', and growing up listening to hard rock and metal - I was obviously screwed from day one.

But here's the thing - just like YOU, I've always had the tools and mechanism and ability to BECOME a good singer, even if I struggled for a year, or two years - or ten years (yep, that was me).

Because 'fluking it' as a singer who kinda gets most things right and sounds pretty good from day one is one thing, but actually becoming a serious, professional level singer of a highly skilled level is something that absolutely everyone is capable of - even if you think you're just not a natural singer, which is probably true, but is ultimately irrelevant.

But it takes dedication and perseverance.

This ain't no cheap trick or magic pill - it takes training, technique and the right attitude over an extended period of time to become a great singer, and that kind of dedication just isn't for everyone - so it's true, not everyone really can become a good singer; but not for the reasons you probably think.

Genetically, you might or might not be a 'natural' - but you absolutely DO have all the skills and tools available to improve your ability to sing. But, the caveat being that not everyone really has the stones to dedicate themselves to the cause of becoming a great singer and applying themselves to getting the job done and nailing their goal of becoming a next level, pro singer.
