Layne Staley was one of my main 'guys' when I was first learning to sing. I just LOVED his voice and was amazed at the power and range obviously, but also the expression, vulnerability and ability to double and harmonize with not only his own voice, but also Jerry's voice in such a magic way.

Truth be told, I could barely hit the first few notes in most Alice in Chains songs - they were just too freakin' high... especially the chorus!

Until I developed the Formant Activation System that I now teach here at Foundation Vocal Method.

Here's how I approach Layne Staley now;

This three step system gets the WILDEST results I've ever seen in over 15 years of coaching experience - once you tie together;

1 - Involuntary Vocal Innervation
2 - The tone you're generating
3 - The formant of your vowel

... it becomes easier than you've ever imagined to approach a Layne Staley line with power, ease and finesse.

Here's how I approach Alice in Chains songs using this approach;

Now, you might look at this and think "cool, good for you dude" - but if we take a deeper look at WHAT I'm actually doing here, you're going to start understanding that it's all about your vowels.

For example, when I'm singing the word "sand" just past those first few lines, I'm actually modifying this sound subtly to "UH" to make way for the changing frequencies of my PITCH and how these then relate to the formants of the vowel I'm singing.

You'll hear the same thing when I sing "place" just a few lines later - it's not really an "AY" vowel like you'd expect, right?

I'm actually modifying this sound to "EH" because structurally, that sounds relates to this higher pitch I'm singing.

Basically, your registration is tied to your vowels, ESPECIALLY if you want to hit the nail on the head just like Layne does/just like I'm doing in the cover above.

Basically, my vowel matches my pitch!

But what about the more aggressive stuff? I mean, Down in a Hole is a challenging song - but it's definitely not "Dam that river" or "Man in the box" right?

Here's how I'd approach the more aggressive styles;I know I know, you're thinking "good for you dude" again - but there's literally hundreds of reviews from my students saying basically the same thing about the Formant Activation System I'm sharing - that it's a "game changer" and that this system is the "best vocal program of all time".

Because it's based in fact.

This isn't metaphors, this isn't monkey sounds - it's literally how your formants ring in your resonant space, a basic fundamental of how your voice works!

And here's the thing - once you 'hear it' you'll never go back.

Let's take my cover of "Dam that river" above.

The first word is "i" right? So I'm singing an "i" vowel, right?

No, I'm singing a lateral AA back vowel, and modifying it to UH on the lower harmony, and OE on the higher harmony lines for the most part.

How about that big "OH" in the chorus... that's gotta be an "O" vowel, right?

Nope - it's actually an OE vowel, and I'm modifying pretty open towards an EH vowel, almost "EH-w" instead of "OH-w"

It's subtle though, right?

That's the point - you're not meant to be mangling your vowels and grunting your words out in a weird way - this is all about formants and frequencies... not pronunciation!

I sound like I'm singing all of these words, right? Listen again - every single sound is a variant of AH/AA/AY/EE/OE and modified along one of two paths.

There's only FIVE sounds that I'm singing here in these Layne Staley covers.

Five.

That sounds MUCH more manageable than trying to think about the vowel for the hundreds of words in a set of songs, and then which of the modifications is the right one, right?

This is all MUCH easier than you're thinking.

I'd love to share all of this with you and get you singing bigger, better and HIGHER than you ever imagined, so here's what I'd suggest;

Being able to realize what is the appropriate way to sing the vowels in each register is a game changer. When you realize it, you feel confident and powered, no matter what region you are singing. For example, you can sing in a more headed registry with a lot of power making it sounds powerful like in chest registers. Kegan is an awesome teacher. For sure I recommend this course.

Learned more in this then I have in 5 years of multiple courses and coaches, game changing information and instantly unlocked a range I didn't know I had. Very refreshing for things to actually make sense and work in a practical way. If you feel stuck in your mid high range I think this is especially helpful but still helpful no matter where your voice is at. Easiest 5/5 rating I've ever given.

Started singing in 2017, first studying all the famous – KTVA, R.A., P.B., etc., and I was in no position to understand what they were doing. I just figured I had a break at C4, and singing to piano scales with that in the back of my mind was practically torture. I moved it up to G4 after years but it was just strenuous, rigid, extremely tiring and qualitatively hopeless in comparison to my favorite artists who made it seem so easy. Kegan helped me realize it's because "it is easy", but what they're doing is so far from what I was doing, which I didn't grasp until I actually changed what I listen for and how I even hear singers (also covered in this course). I remember always having this intuituve sense that singing shouldn't be hard or uncomfortable no matter what register of the voice or whether you're a rock guy etc. It was such a struggle to not just give up when I'd record with bands and basically blow my voice out in front of producers and bandmates just to get an F#4 in a freaking backup vocal. Literally went to the studio bathroom and started beating my head in anger. Reaching an E4 was abrasive, and much louder than when natural singers I observed sang way higher in full voice, because I had to make it so loud for it to even happen. Good singers can control their volume, and really their power comes from more of a treble boost, which you'll understand within this course. For years I kept looking, feeling like maybe I just didn't 'have it' or I wasn't trying hard enough. Discouraged by all the YT vocal coaches saying stuff like: "That's definitely a belted A4 in chest voice!" talking about Chris Cornell or the likes. BTW guys who say that never quite get the paint stripping treble in their tone (or the dexterity, stylistic freedom and ease) that you've probably seen Kegan demonstrate. Ever since I found Kegan, I quit looking further. The Foundation Vocal Course brings all aspects together, the techniques, principles, tools, psychology, the nerd stuff as well as the practical, so that no matter who you are, if you're serious, you can learn to sing. Here's a tip if you enroll: Throw out everything you thought you knew about singing. I can't extrapolate the significance of this; it must be experienced. You will realize how the different concepts actually work and no matter what your disposition is, this course thoroughly addresses every potential variable and hands you all the tools for troubleshooting, whether tonal, physical or psychological hurdles - or all of them! FVC ties things together and makes sense. It is everything I had always been looking for.
