I've gotta be honest with you - I took singing lessons with a local singing teacher.
... actually, MANY local singing teachers, dozens of 'em.
For nearly TEN years.
... and I was STILL a pretty bad singer.
My pitch was okay, I could carry a tune - but, I still didn't really have any range, no tone or colour to my voice, no stamina (my voice used to crap out after about three songs in rehearsal) and really just no idea how to put all those annoying singing exercises that I'd been doing for ten years into REAL songs to actually sing better.
I think I might have actually be a slightly better singer BEFORE I ever took singing lessons with my local teacher. My head ended up tied in knots about which muscle to use, how to support, where to put my tongue - I basically lost all confidence.
Teachers actually - many.
I went to EVERY teacher within a one hour drive of the city I was living in at the time, and got the same results every time - a handfull of new exercises to practice, but no more range, no better at singing real songs and a sucky tone overall.
Horror stories aside - within about a month of moving to a new city, I went to a "local" teacher in this new local that absolutely ROCKED my world.
I discovered range that I didn't even realise existed in the last ten years of training.
I found a better tone.
I learned how to actually sing REAL songs, not just mamama exercises and monkey sounds.
... within about two weeks of meeting this new teacher in a new city 1000km from where I had been taking singing lessons previously.
There is NO way I could have driven 1000km (about 11 hours) and back every week to take lessons with this guy when I lived in my old city, right?
I guess I've got two questions for you right now - do you want to move over 1000km away to find a better singing teacher - on the slim chance that there actually IS a better teacher in a new city...
... Or, do you want me to teach you exactly what I learned that changed my life as a singer forever? The 'secret' to a massive range? (it's not really a secret). A better tone. Freedom. Stamina. POWER?
This video is a great start;
